What Is DHA in Self-Tanner? The Science, Explained Simply

DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is the active ingredient in nearly every self-tanner. It's a colourless sugar that reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin to produce brown pigments called melanoidins. This reaction creates a temporary tan over a few hours, without sun or UV exposure. The colour fades as those surface skin cells naturally shed.

How DHA creates a tan on your skin

DHA tans your skin through a chemical reaction called the Maillard reaction, the same browning process that turns toast golden. The DHA reacts with amino acids in the dead cells of your stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin, producing brown pigments called melanoidins. This happens only on the surface, so no UV light, sun exposure or melanin production is involved.

The reaction starts within an hour of application and keeps deepening for several hours, which is why a tan looks light at first and darker by morning. Because the colour sits in the very top layer of skin, it can't be washed off once developed, but it also can't penetrate deeper or affect the living skin beneath.

Why the colour keeps building after you've washed off

Most self-tanners reach their final shade roughly 6 to 8 hours after application, even though you rinse the guide colour off much sooner. That's because the Maillard reaction continues independently of the product on the surface once the DHA has bound to your skin. Rinsing early removes the cosmetic bronzer and excess product, not the developing tan underneath.

Is DHA safe to use?

DHA is widely regarded as safe for topical cosmetic use and is used as the active, colour-developing ingredient in self-tanners. It works only on the surface layer of dead skin cells and is not absorbed in any meaningful way during normal lotion or mousse application. It has a long track record in cosmetics dating back decades.

The main caution relates to spray tanning, where there is potential to inhale the mist or get it in the eyes and lips. Practical steps reduce this:

  • Hold your breath briefly or wear nose plugs during a spray application.
  • Use protective eyewear and avoid spraying directly onto the lips or inner eye area.
  • For at-home products, apply in a ventilated room and wash your hands afterwards.

What is erythrulose and how is it different?

Erythrulose is a second tanning sugar that works the same way as DHA but more slowly and gently. Like DHA, it reacts with amino acids in the skin's surface to create brown melanoidins, but it produces a softer, slightly redder tone and takes longer to develop, often a day or more to reach full colour. Many formulas combine the two.

The reason brands pair DHA with erythrulose is that they complement each other. DHA gives speed and depth; erythrulose adds longevity and a more even, gradual fade. Used together, they often produce a tan that fades more smoothly and looks less patchy at the end of its life than DHA alone.

Why DHA tans fade the way they do

A DHA tan fades because the coloured skin cells it created are constantly being shed. Your stratum corneum naturally renews itself roughly every two to four weeks, so the surface cells holding the melanoidin pigment slough off a little each day. As they go, the tan lightens. This is why self-tans last around 5 to 10 days for most people.

Because the pigment is locked into individual surface cells rather than evenly absorbed, fade can look uneven, especially on areas that exfoliate faster. The fastest fading happens where skin is thinner or rubs more:

  • Hands, knuckles, wrists and elbows.
  • Knees, ankles and feet.
  • Anywhere exposed to friction, frequent washing or chlorinated water.

Moisturising daily slows the fade by keeping those surface cells supple and intact for longer, while exfoliating speeds it up by removing them.

Does DHA give you any sun protection?

No. A DHA tan offers little to no meaningful sun protection and should never be treated as sunscreen. The brown colour it creates is cosmetic pigment in dead surface cells, not melanin, and it does not block UV in any way that protects you. You can burn just as easily with a self-tan as without one.

This matters in the Australian climate, where UV levels are high for much of the year. Always apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or 50+ sunscreen as part of your normal routine, regardless of how dark your self-tan looks. If a product combines self-tanner with SPF, the sun protection comes from the listed sunscreen actives and SPF rating, not from the DHA.

DHA percentage and how dark a tan develops

How dark a self-tan develops depends largely on the DHA concentration, which usually ranges from around 5% in light or gradual formulas up to roughly 15% or more in ultra-dark products. A higher percentage means more reaction sites used and a deeper final colour, which is why "dark" and "ultra dark" formulas contain more DHA than gradual tans.

Percentage isn't the only factor, though. Your final shade is also shaped by:

  • Your skin's natural undertone and how many amino acids are available to react.
  • How prepped your skin is - clean, exfoliated, dry skin develops more evenly than oily or flaky skin.
  • Development time - leaving a tan to process longer (within the product's guidance) deepens it.
  • Layering - applying gradual products over several days builds colour without a single high-DHA hit.

If you're new to self-tanning, starting with a lower DHA gradual formula gives you more control and a smaller margin for error.

How to store self-tanner so DHA stays effective

Store self-tanner in a cool, dark place with the lid sealed tightly, because DHA degrades when exposed to heat, light and air. A bathroom cabinet away from the shower, or a bedroom drawer, works better than a sunny windowsill or a hot car. Heat and oxygen break DHA down, which weakens the tan and can shift the colour.

Signs your DHA may have degraded include a tan that develops patchy, weak, or unusually orange, or a product that has darkened or changed smell. To get the most reliable results:

  • Keep bottles upright and firmly closed to limit air exposure.
  • Avoid leaving products in direct sun or near heaters.
  • Use opened products within a few months rather than years, and check the period-after-opening symbol on the pack.
  • Don't decant into clear containers that let light in.

What DHA means for sensitive skin

DHA itself is generally well tolerated, but sensitive skin can still react to a self-tanner because of fragrance, preservatives or alcohol in the formula rather than the DHA. If your skin is reactive, the safest approach is a patch test: apply a small amount to a discreet area like your inner forearm and wait 24 hours before tanning your whole body.

To lower the chance of irritation:

  • Choose fragrance-free or low-alcohol formulas where possible.
  • Favour gradual, lower-DHA products that are gentler and easier to control.
  • Moisturise dry, sensitive areas before applying so they don't grab colour or dryness.
  • Avoid applying immediately after shaving, waxing or exfoliating, when skin is more vulnerable.
